Surrey’s Darts Hill Garden Conservancy Trust Society is hosting a Spring Pruning Workshop on Saturday, March 1, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM PST at Darts Hill Garden Park – Maple Activity Center. This hands-on workshop is designed to teach gardening enthusiasts the fundamentals of pruning, including proper techniques, objectives, and tool care. Led by certified arborist Rosina Mak, this event will provide both theoretical and practical knowledge to help participants confidently maintain their gardens.

Why Pruning is Essential for Plant Health

Pruning plays a crucial role in the health and longevity of plants. Removing dead, diseased, or overgrown branches allows plants to flourish by encouraging new growth, improving air circulation, and reducing the risk of disease. Improper pruning can weaken plants and stunt their growth, making it vital for gardeners to understand the correct methods.

This 4-hour workshop begins indoors with a slide presentation, covering pruning objectives, types of pruning cuts, and basic plant biology. Participants will learn how to evaluate a tree’s structure, make informed pruning decisions, and select the right tools for the job. Rosina Mak will also provide expert guidance on tool maintenance, ensuring longevity and efficiency for future gardening projects.

Hands-On Pruning Experience in a Beautiful Garden Setting

Following the indoor session, attendees will head outdoors for a practical pruning demonstration in the scenic Darts Hill Garden Park. This immersive experience will allow participants to apply what they’ve learned under the guidance of a seasoned professional.

The interactive format ensures that attendees gain confidence in their pruning abilities, with the opportunity to ask Rosina questions about their own gardens. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced gardener, this event provides valuable insights into sustainable garden care.

What to Bring and What to Expect

Participants should dress for outdoor weather, wear clothes that can get a little dirty, and bring their own beverage and bagged lunch. All necessary pruning tools will be provided.

With only 12 spots available, early registration is recommended to secure a place in this highly anticipated workshop.
